For lunch we were invited to the house of a friend of Ixnal (who had taught us some Kaqchikel yesterday) in Santa Maria de Jesus. We were shown how the traditional tortillas are made, with a couple of us having a go, and were treated to a classic, and special, traditional dish for lunch that takes 24 hours to make! Needless to say, it was delicious.
I think that making the tortillas is something we are definitely going to do when we next study the Maya in topic, although I will need a LOT of practise first to do it as well as Ixnal did.
It was also an opportunity to see how modern Maya families live, and we got an insight into how important their bonds are and how they stay together. So welcoming, so warm, so friendly…
